Transrotor vs Pro-Ject: Two Different Approaches to Vinyl – A Clear Conclusion
The PA 3100 HV from the German company T+A is another member of the elitist club of 2x300 W and more. It promises up to 2x500 W in 4 Ω, a colossal power (including the first 20 watts in class A) that the most demanding loudspeakers - ribbon, electrostatic or magnetostatic, but also high-end loudspeakers with multiple drivers and complex loads - will be able to accommodate in order to have a wide dynamic range.
This HV range, which stands for High Voltage, uses supply voltages that are deliberately higher than average (about three times higher). This choice makes it possible to achieve excellent linearity from exclusively discrete circuits, in a topology based on J-FET transistors, in the manner of a very good tube assembly without the drawbacks. In addition, there is a dual mono structure, balanced from input to output with selection of balanced (4) or unbalanced (7) inputs using relays, not lossy wiring. The volume control also uses relay logic that switches calibrated resistors in 1 dB steps. The unit is built in a partially milled pure aluminium enclosure up to 4 cm thick with 10 mm partitions to isolate the internal circuits, resulting in a weight of 38 kg. No ferromagnetic components are used. A large, easy-to-read display houses two large meters and the essential indications as well as those of the setup menus, which concern tone, loudness, and even a parametric corrector to correct room resonances in the critical 25 Hz- 200 Hz band (with an optional APM-HV module). At the rear, the connectors are top-notch, with an RCA/XLR preamp output, as well as a monitoring loop and a connector for an optional power supply, plus two LAN sockets for automation and H-Link, a proprietary T+A mode. All the sliders are pushed to the extreme for a price, certainly consequent, but with services which make one enter at full level in what one calls the Hi-End
Listening In the manufacturer's vision, "The HV series represents exactly the idea behind the term high-end: innovative technologies, uncompromising construction and absolute performance. We're not far from agreeing with him, as the electronics provide a feeling of ease and fulfilment. With the Denon DCD-A110 + TotalDac d1-core pair as the source, the excerpt from Concerto Italiano (Book VIII of Monteverdi's madrigals, Opus 111) takes on an unusual dimension, literally pushing back the limits of the space in which the choir and the soprano move, whose singing is coupled with a feeling of overwhelming naturalness. The bandwidth seems subjectively infinite and filled with an energy that is equally so. You have to listen to this kind of amplifier once to realise how much emotion and vitality can be found in well-recorded music, even on a CD. To convince oneself of this, the excerpt from the Berry Hayward Consort's percussion (Juan del Encina - BNL) deploys nuances of strikes, stick and skin resonances that simulate the real thing, so that one takes oneself to pushing the volume to indecent levels, without the shadow of saturation, except for that of our listening room. The Focal Spectral 40 th, never lazy in the low register, are even more percussive and zealous, carried forward.
Via Qobuz, the first movement "Like a sound of nature" of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 "Titan" by Guilini (Chicago Symphony, Emi) lives up to its name: titanic in its substance and depth, the structure of the strings, woodwinds and brass; all of this comes alive, all of it appears in a light that is no longer incidental. This amp, admittedly intimidating because of its price and weight, allows one to taste how Hi-End can reveal a musical truth that exists in a latent state. A master stroke and an experience to be lived...
The + : Uncompromising electronics and musicality.
The - : Intimidating but also so attractive.
