A high-end power amplifier has no preamplification section, which distinguishes it from an integrated amplifier.
The amplifier must be connected to a preamplifier and its role is to increase the signal level to feed the speakers. No frills, just more power for the sound.
Power amplifiers are available as stereo or mono blocks to power each speaker individually. A power block, which can be added to an integrated hi-fi amplifier or a home cinema amplifier with a pre-out, can be an interesting solution.
