In 1971 Johan Reke founded a distribution company to import Michell decks into Germany. At that time, Michell was selling decks based on the Transcriptors model of the 1960s, designed by David Gammon. A few years later, Transcriptors moved to Ireland and John Michell began producing the Hydraulic Reference model himself. In 1976 Johan developed a full-fledged model, the prototype of which was made in Germany, and with this he came to John, asking him to start series production. The model was named Transrotor AC, after the acrylic glass in which the device was made. Over the next few years, about 1,500 were produced.
Production was then transferred to Germany and successively expanded to meet the growing demand and the introduction of new technological solutions, the most notable of which were the magnetic suspension of the table top and the gimbal suspension of the chassis. Another important feature of the Transrotor product range is that all electronic components are located in separate units, so that they can be easily replaced if necessary. Production is measured in hundreds of models per year, with radical new models appearing not so often, mainly successive upgrades of existing models.
The chassis is a 'sandwich' made of two 20mm thick acrylic carbonate sheets with a 5mm thick aluminium sheet in between. It is mounted on three adjustable feet moulded in aluminium. The bearing unit, a hardened steel shaft with a diameter of 10 mm, is pressed into a precision-fitted brass shaft supported by a steel ball. The shaft is pressed into an aluminium flywheel, which supports a solid aluminium washer, 65 mm thick and weighing 10 kg. On the underside of the washer is a concentric groove that reduces vibration. A 5 mm thick carbon acrylate mat is placed on top of the head plate. There is no need for an additional mat. A robust, machined aluminium axle collar is included.
A synchronous motor in an aluminium housing is mounted on the left edge of the table. The motor pulley is double radius, 33 and 45 rpm. The belt is silicone and seamless. Fingerprints on the acrylic and especially the aluminium are also very visible - the use of the gloves provided is recommended.
