Hifi network players are a way of enjoying dematerialised digital files with exceptional sound quality, even better than a CD, thanks to the use of formats such as FLAC and DSD.
They are also known as "streamers" because they can also access Internet streams such as digital radio and online music services (e.g. Qobuz, Tidal).
The top-of-the-range network player is an alternative to the CD player. They can also incorporate a hi-fi server function, allowing audio files to be stored on a high-capacity internal hard drive.
Some devices have a built-in digital-to-analogue converter, while others only offer digital outputs. The latter are called "network transports".
